A working definition of “art”

Art is human action (often, but not always, entailing the production of an artifact or the definition of a space) exercised (individually or collectively) within particular material, conceptual, and social contexts (not always harmonious) for the particular purposes (sometimes explicit and sometimes tacit) of interested parties and institutions.

    Is an actuary an artist? This definition seems to imply yes.

    Absolutely. In fact, art is all about the probabilistic projection of possible worlds interesting particularly in relation to the actual state of affairs.

    Some do it with numbers. Some do it with stories. Degrees of precision may vary according to the conceptual technologies applied. ;)
